United Stationers

United Stationers, Cranbury NJ | 3.265 MW Ballasted Roof Array

Scope of Work

SunDurance Energy has engineered, procured and constructed a 3.265 megawatt (MW) ballasted rooftop solar energy system at United Stationers’ distribution center in Cranbury, New Jersey.  KDC Solar will own the project and lease the roof space from building owner, The Sudler Companies, and sell clean energy to the tenant, United Stationers, under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement.

Brief Description of Effort

SunDurance has designed a system that optimizes the energy output of this huge 570,000 square-foot warehouse roof (about the size of 10 football fields). Using just over 14,000 Trina solar panels, the system will provide nearly 100% of United Stationers’ electricity needs with clean energy at a cost savings to what they currently pay the utility company.  The system, which is expected to produce 3,900,000 kilowatt hours per year, is equivalent to taking the carbon output of over 525 cars off the road or eliminating the amount of carbon sequestered annually by 570 acres of pine forests.

Much roof prep work was need before construction could begin. This distribution center has a rock-ballast roof and could not bare any additional weight of the PV system.  SunDurance needed to remove an equal amount of stone using a large vacuum! Another challenge is working in conjunction with this very active 110-bay shipping and receiving facility. Our construction team is installing the system with no impact to the day-to-day business activities through the careful staging of materials and equipment and by effectively communicating with on-site management.
